It’s not in just any city that you can go downtown to a harbour side park on your lunch break and catch a free concert. And it’s not just any free concert that will leave you thinking, That’s it! That’s the sound I’ve been looking for! These guys have got it!

The city: St. John’s, Newfoundland.

The band: Matthew Hornell and The Diamond Minds.

Not everyone out there can make it to The Rock for a wicked concert series like this (St. John’s harbour in the background and ships sailing in through a fog wall beyond the Narrows) but you can hear these guys and their melodic meld of folk and acoustic rock because they are beginning a cross Canada tour and are looking for venues! Whether you make it to a live show or buy their record online, you won’t be dissapointed.

Here’s a lyrical sampling from “Lose to Learn”: I need smoke and balanced blood / and elevation against this flood / you’ve got fuel and fire to burn / the long road is engrained with cracks and turns / you’ve got to lose to learn.

Add to that mandolin guitar-solos, earthy vocals, rocking bass and solid drumming  and you have a band to iPod-ize and set on permanent replay! These guys bring together innocence and experience with lively music and deep lyrics. Some wines sour with age, some grow rich and more complex: my bet is that this band is a vintage that will last and only get better!

If you need more convincing, check out Matthew Hornell and The Diamond Minds for yourself!
